Olney Chamber Cancels Community Night Event
On Thursday, July 30, the following was sent by the Olney Chamber of Commerce to its members:
"The novel coronavirus is an invisible enemy we are all fighting together. The unprecedented pandemic effects have impacted everyone's personal and economic life. We wish you all good health and hope you are following guidelines to stay safe.
Many traditional local events have been cancelled, including Olney Days, the Strawberry Festival, and the Women's Board Bazaar & Picnic. The Chamber has had to forego its ATHENA Award, Annual Awards & Installation Banquet and monthly Networking Mixers.
Earlier, the Olney Chamber announced the cancellation of our National Night Out celebration. It would have been held next week on its annual first Tuesday of August schedule.
Regrettably, we are now sending notice that the 2020 Community Night event is being cancelled.
This is the normal time frame for preparation and registration to begin. However, amid the uncertainties of school scheduling, venue availability, potential for re-imposing stay at home orders, and even the current limitations on public gatherings, there are simply not enough assurances to allow staging the Columbus Day event.
We are disappointed. Community Night is a highly anticipated annual occurrence, attended by thousands in the greater Olney-Sandy Spring area. Our hope is for a speedy exit from the cloud Covid-19 has cast, and a return to some level of normalcy.
Until then, we urge everyone to support our neighborhood merchants as they struggle to stay afloat. It's always been the right thing to do, and is even more important now. Remember that $2 of each $3 spent locally is reinvested in the community.
Stay safe and
