Lease Extension for Satellite Station
The Olney Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that effective April 1, 2020, an agreement was finalized to keep the Montgomery County Police Satellite Station in its current location in Olney. The prior lease existed for many years between Giant Food Services and the Olney Chamber of Commerce.
Shortly after the relocation of the longstanding Giant store on Georgia Avenue to its new location at the Village Center, Giant Food Services sold the store property. The property includes the former Giant store and parking area, along with the property containing the Montgomery County Liquor Store and the Montgomery County Police Satellite Station.
The sale caused some uncertainty concerning the future of the Police Satellite Station. After lengthy discussions and negotiations involving various stakeholders and leaders from the Olney Chamber of Commerce, the Maryland District 14 Legislative Team and the Montgomery County Executive’s office, a new lease was completed between Montgomery County, Maryland and Olney One Center, LLC, the purchaser and new landlord. The new lease agreement secured a 15-year term for the Police Satellite Station.
In the early 1990’s when business and residential growth was accelerating in the greater Olney area, the Olney Chamber began advocating for a Police facility to serve the greater Olney-Sandy Spring area. When it opened in 1997 it was the culmination of a long campaign and the efforts of the Chamber, Montgomery County Police and Giant Food Services, Inc. The Police Satellite structure was leased by the Olney Chamber after a successful fundraising effort. Pledges and contributions came from the Chamber’s membership, local HOAs and citizens. At that time, the Olney Police Satellite Station was one of only five in the entire County.
In 1999 the Olney Chamber completed the purchase of the Police Satellite Station facility. The Chamber’s continued advocacy for and financial commitment to the Police Satellite Station has included contributing towards the expenses of upkeep and maintenance of the Station. We remain grateful for the continued financial support of local organizations and individuals that allows us to fulfill and continue this long-term commitment.
In recent years, the Chamber has purchased bicycles for Police patrolling of local neighborhoods, invested in providing the Police Satellite Station with a new, energy efficient HVAC system, and replaced the facility’s exterior siding. Additional renovations and improvements are being planned.
Today, Olney’s is the only Montgomery County Police Satellite Station still in service. We can’t overemphasize its importance to our community’s exceptionally low crime levels. With the future of the Olney Police Satellite Station successfully resolved, officers don’t have to travel as frequently to their Wheaton HQ and are able to spend many more hours patrolling locally. The mere presence of the facility also serves as a deterrent for criminals.
The Olney Chamber of Commerce recognizes the efforts and cooperation of all those who contributed and expresses a big “Thank You” to:
Marc Elrich, Montgomery County Executive
Marcus Jones, MCPD Chief of Police
Dinesh Patil, MCPD Assistant Chief
Marc Yamada, MCPD District 4 Commander
Greg Ossont, Deputy Director MoCo Dept. of General Services
Craig Zucker, MD State Senator
Eric Luedtke, Anne Kaiser & Pamela Queen, MD District 14 Legislative Delegates
Tom Sebastian, Olney One Center, LLC
We add special thanks to Dale Tibbitts in Mr. Elrich’s office, and Olney Chamber Board member Marc Rosendorf (Rosendorf Group/Law Offices of Marc Rosendorf) for their perseverance and diligence that led to the successful retention and long term future of the Olney Police Satellite Station.
